Climate change brings many challenges when it comes to water. As rainfall becomes increasingly variable and surface water supplies less reliable, governments, businesses and communities alike turn to groundwater as the solution. However, doing this without sustainable management, depletes aquifers, accelerates water insecurity and increases flood and drought risks. Pakistan is experiencing this issue first hand, with groundwater levels declining by approximately 1-2.5 meters per year in Islamabad and Lahore, and Quetta experiencing up to 6 meters loss per year. Despite these growing risks, groundwater systems remain largely unmanaged, with limited planning, monitoring and protection.
