Project overview

ADAM+, a WFP tool, boosts earthquake risk analysis by integrating GEM’s ground shake data for faster, accurate insights within 72 hours.

The challenge

WFP relies on satellites for earthquake damage assessment, but optical satellites are weather-dependent, and radar data is noisy.

The solution

ADAM+, a WFP internal tool, enhances global earthquake risk and impact analysis. Partnering with the Global Earthquake Model Foundation (GEM), it integrates ground shake data for faster, more accurate insights within 72 hours. GEM’s risk and impact assessments are key to ADAM+’s improved accuracy and efficiency. The solution supported in delivering risk assessments for Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Haiti.

Results

GEM/ADAM+ improves efficiency in disaster preparedness and rapid post-disaster assessments. 520 million people across six target countries stand to benefit from enhanced readiness and timely impact evaluations.

"Our collaboration with the GEM Foundation is strengthening earthquake preparedness and impact analysis. Their hazard models and vulnerability data enhance WFP’s risk assessments, aiding disaster planning. Post-earthquake, GEM’s data improves rapid impact analysis, enriching WFP’s Earthquake Bulletin. In short, this collaboration boosts both preparedness and response."
