About WFP

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In emergencies, we get food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. After the cause of an emergency has passed, we use food to help communities rebuild their shattered lives.

WFP is part of the United Nations system and is voluntarily funded. Want to know more?

Achieving Zero Hunger

The world has made hard-earned progress in recent years, lifting millions out of hunger. Over the last 15 years alone, 200 million people around the world have been lifted out of hunger.  Yet 795 million people remain chronically undernourished. That means 1 out of every 9 people has insufficient food to lead a healthy life.

Our global goal of a world with Zero Hunger can only be achieved if we increase the pace of our efforts and by working together to explore every avenue to eliminate hunger. Old approaches to humanitarian aid must give way to new thinking, bold ideas and technological innovation. We believe twenty-first century developments in big data, social media and mobile technology have the potential to transform the lives of vulnerable populations across the world and address the roots of hunger.

WFP Innovation Accelerator

With this in mind, WFP launched an Innovation Accelerator in Munich, Germany, to better identify, support and scale promising ideas and potential solutions to help reach our global goal of Zero Hunger by 2030. It's a space where the world can find out what works and what doesn’t in addressing hunger.

The way forward in the fight against hunger is not necessarily in building grand plans, but identifying and testing solutions in an agile way. We support ideas from inspiration to implementation, providing financial support and mentorship to take take proven solutions to scale. The Innovation Accelerator is a place where we can be bold, and fail as well as succeed.

The Innovation Accelerator is generously supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Foreign Office and the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry.

Approach

The Accelerator is a creative, collaborative and fast-paced environment that invites the private sector, civil society and WFP entrepreneurs to tackle humanitarian and development challenges together. We use cutting-edge techniques and human-centred design to improve project sustainability and keep beneficiaries’ needs in mind. Projects are piloted at an early stage to ensure impact and maximise cost effectiveness.

We explore new, ambitious partnerships with the private sector, civil society and academia. Sourcing ideas from across the world, the Accelerator leverages expertise, resources and bold ideas from cross-industry collaborators - and prioritises projects that truly make a difference to the people we serve.
