Project overview

Machine Learning for Anticipatory Action (ML4AA) is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) venture predicting climate shocks before they happen, facilitating effective humanitarian interventions and their impact.

The challenge

The impact of climate change is worsening the food insecurity of small-scale farmers. This situation is exacerbated by the less-than-ideal warning systems and the limitations of the current methods for predicting seasonal weather.

The solution

Machine learning for anticipatory actions (ML4AA) takes a proactive approach to dealing with drought risks, using cutting-edge technologies and insights from climate experts. This solution explores AI and machine learning to improve predictions of disaster risks for vulnerable people, allowing for quick warnings and timely assistance. The team comprises data scientists and climate risk and anticipatory action specialists, each with strong WFP operational expertise.

The team plans to expand geographic coverage across multiple countries in Southern Africa, accommodating different climate hazards.
