Project overview

The Green Meal Project combines two successful innovative solutions to manage food loss and food preparation in schools, improving cooking practices for better health outcomes.

The challenge

School meals are one of the most effective mechanisms for improving food security and nutrition outcomes for children and their communities. Delivering safe, healthy, fresh meals, however, can be a challenge when schools have varying levels of resources, from staffing and available funding to kitchen tools and cold storage options. In South Sudan, these barriers are great given its current context of instability and conflict.

The solution

The Green Meal Project will improve school meal delivery in South Sudan by combining two successful innovative solutions - the Post-Harvest Loss Venture and Sustainable Fuel for Cooking - and implementing them in a new context. Working closely with the national school feeding programme, WFP is investigating solutions for the storage of perishable food ingredients and safer cooking technologies, with efficient cookers and alternative fuel.

The Green Meal Project is a unique approach to innovating across WFP's work, as it is leveraging funds from an innovative product - ShareTheMeal - to join two complementary solutions in a context of great need and opportunity.

Results

The Green Meal Project is in its scoping and pilot phase through mid-2026. After its initial assessment, the solutions will launch in three pilot schools in South Sudan to reach 3,000 school children. In addition, it will build the capacities of local staff to implement these technologies in school meal preparation.
