Project overview

SIaaS by NoorNation is an innovative model that replaces traditional flood irrigation with modern, smart irrigation systems powered by the solar-driven ‘LifeBox'.

Challenge

70% of irrigation water in Egypt is wasted due to inefficient flood irrigation practices. Farmers spend up to 60% of their pre-harvest energy costs on diesel fuel for water pumping, reducing productivity and profitability by at least 30%. This unsustainable practice escalates costs, reduces crop yields, and contributes significantly to CO₂ emissions, negatively impacting both environmental and agricultural sustainability.

Solution

Solar Irrigation as a Service (SIaaS) by NoorNation is an innovative model that replaces traditional flood irrigation with modern, smart irrigation systems powered by the solar-driven unit LifeBox. This solution enables farmers to pay per use for the time of water pumped during the entire cultivation calendar. By eliminating the need for large upfront investments, SIaaS offers a financially accessible and sustainable irrigation solution tailored to smallholder farmers' usage patterns.

Result

Through its targeted pilot programmes, SIaaS by NoorNation validated the effectiveness and practicality of SIaaS systems. As the pilot is still ongoing, the team projects it will contribute to a 90 percent reduction in diesel pump usage, resulting in a minimum 25 percent boost in agricultural productivity and a corresponding 10 percent increase in farmer profitability.
