Project overview

Ignitia has developed a unique weather forecasting model that enables smallholder farmers to grow and improve their yield sustainability.

The problem

In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 96 percent of cultivated land is rain-fed. Changing rainfall patterns due to climate change is a significant concern. In fact, weather accounts for up to 80 percent of the yield gap experienced among farmers, making reliable weather information crucial for better yields, reduced costs and risks, and climate resilience.

The solution

Ignitia is an external startup supported by WFP that works in 11 countries. It addresses the challenge of unreliable weather forecasts in sub-Saharan Africa, where climate change is increasingly affecting farming. By using an advanced physics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) predictive model, Ignitia delivers highly accurate, localized weather predictions and climate-smart agricultural advice to farmers.

In 2024, Ignitia’s collaboration with WFP expanded to Ghana where the venture signed a Long-Term Agreement with WFP Ghana for the next three years.

To date, Ignitia has provided services to 2.7 million smallholder farmers of which approximately 700,000 are recurrent. Together with WFP in Mali, 5,481 smallholder farmers received critical weather updates and advice from Ignitia, improving resilience and yields by about 10 percent.
