The Problem

Around the world, 821 million people go to bed hungry every night. With a record number of global crises emerging – many fueled by conflict and the effects of extreme climate – humanitarian needs are on the rise.

The Solution

ShareTheMeal is an app from the World Food Programme that enables people to "share their meals" with children in need. It costs just US$ 0.50 to feed one child for a day.

The 50-Cent Proposition

Even though we produce enough food for everyone, one in nine people is hungry. At the same time, there are 20 times more smartphone users than hungry people in the world. ShareTheMeal makes fighting hunger accessible to anyone with a smartphone, and gives them the ability to help end one of the greatest challenges of our time.

ShareTheMeal’s fundamental proposition is this: If everyone with a smartphone “shared their meal” with a simple tap and a $0.50 donation, we could help end global hunger.

The ShareTheMeal app has a community of more than 1.3 million users who have, as of April 2019, shared over 35 million meals with children in need. These donations have helped some of WFP’s most critical operations, including those in Yemen, Syria, and South Sudan.

Through different app features, ShareTheMeal gives its community the ability to connect both with the impact of their donations and with their friends and family. Over 10,000 people have joined The Table, a monthly subscription programme where members receive personalized updates about the families they’ve helped. Users can also create customized “teams” in the app, enabling them to set goals and challenge their friends, family and followers to join them in fighting hunger.

ShareTheMeal

We have dozens of apps on our phones, but one app keeps us grounded—reminding us to count our blessings, and think of others who have nothing and ask for nothing in return. ShareTheMeal, for me, is a daily inspiration and reminder that a child out there is smiling and dreaming of a better tomorrow.”

Easy to give any amount when you can. Wonderful app. This is what we should be making smartphone apps for!”

Where We Go From Here

ShareTheMeal will continue to develop into a community that leverages technology to broaden the fight against hunger. While remaining at the forefront of mobile giving, ShareTheMeal plans to further grow its user base and its contribution to WFP’s private sector fundraising efforts.

What We Still Need

Supporters to help spread the word about ShareTheMeal: corporates who are eager to engage with ShareTheMeal/WFP, public figures who want to create a cause for their community to rally around, and of course, users like you and me who want to get their family and friends on board.
